Ballet is the foundation of dance. From Intro through to Prep, the basics of ballet are taught through syllabus work in a fun and encouraging way. Mime and story-telling through dance are at the heart of the IDTA and RAD syllabus. From Primary through to Grade 1, we start to work on our classical technique and deportment whilst venturing on to more complex exercises that require focus and self discipline. From Grade 2 and beyond... we work at a much higher level with the aim of becoming a real 'ballet-bod'. Once your child has reached a certain level and their feet are strong enough- they will be invited to partake in our pointe class- which is a very exciting time for the young dancer.
Tap is rhythm and rhythm is tap. From Intro through to Prep we learn the basics and get to grips with using our ball and heel taps to discover the different sounds and steps that can be done. From Primary through to Grade 1 things become a little harder- as we then have to focus on leg control with faster steps and more complex rhythms. It is very enjoyable indeed. From Grade 2 and beyond we venture onto bigger and better things that are challenging for the young dancer.
We do two types of Jazz within our sessions- theatrical jazz is typical of what you see on the West End stage, whereas lyrical jazz is a more emotive style- typical of what you see on programmes such as 'The Next Step'. The style uses travelling steps, high kicks, leaps and turns which all need strength and flexibility. This is a highly energetic dance style enjoyed by all.
Defining this style of dance can be difficult, as contemporary dance is an extremely fluid and a very nebulous style of dance. Unlike traditions such as ballet, contemporary dance is not associated with specific dance techniques, but rather with a dance philosophy. In contemporary dance, we explore the natural energy and emotions of our bodies to produce dances which are often very personal. Our schools' style of contemporary dance is very lyrical, and typically we use well-loved songs and ballads that are really enjoyable to work with. It is a really good 'top to toe' workout for children. Typical of what you'll see in such programmes like; 'The Next Step'.
Street Dance (may also be referred to as 'Commerical' 'Break Dance' or 'Hip Hop' is a popular form of dance that is often featured in Music Videos. Current, popular music is used complemented by high energy, fun moves. Typical dance styles seen on TikTok and all the latest dance programmes on TV. Street Dance is loved by boys and girls alike.
If you love anything from the West End or Broadway- this is the class for you. Singing, dancing and a hint of drama we have sooo much fun putting together our cast for big musical numbers. Think Disney, Cats, Mary Poppins, Grease, Chicago, Lion King, Hairspray, Wicked, High School Musical, Sister Act, Bugsy Malone.....and the rest!
Just Dance is our Elevations creation! Pre-COVID, you would see lots of different styles of dance on our timetable including Modern, Jazz, Commerical and Contemporary- we cannot fit them all in at present; so this class is a right old mix up perfect for someone who just wants to DANCE like the latest crazes on TV. Think- The Next Step (CBBC). Think- The Greatest Dancer (BBC). Think- Got to Dance.
Perfect for the competent dancer to attack, and revisit an old style OR perfect for a new dancer to be introduced to ‘latest trends’ all of which we aim to educate and inspire you!
Each week we will introduce students to various forms of dance through set syllabus work and exciting free work. This class is NOT to be missed and is a temporary solution to experiencing various styles of dance in one session over Phase 1.
As we enter Phase 2- you may see our timetable evolve- and if your child has a special interest etc you will then know what to book for future terms ahead.
BALLET & BOOGIE
Ballet and Boogie is basically for the Pre-School market 2.5 yrs-4 yrs replacing Mini classes. This is due to the current COVID-19 situation.
Ideal for your pre-schooler to introduce to the wonderful world of dance. This class does exactly what it says on the tin- we learn some basics of ballet, then have a boogie!. This session is lively but structured; ideal for children taking their first steps in dance. The classes develop physical skills and encourage creativity, expression and confidence. Through participation in appropriate learning activities, children learn:
· to move with control, coordination and confidence,
· an awareness of their body and how it moves through space,
· a sensitivity to music, and expression of emotions through movement.
Behind all the fun students are prepared for a transition to ballet and other dance genres at higher levels.
BALLET & CREATIVE
Ballet and Creative is a little longer than a ballet session alone. What is Creative Activity? The fun stuff! Whilst we focus on very structured and disciplined elements of ballet steps and technique (i.e. manipulating the body in ways that may feel unnatural at first)... creative activity allows children to move with freedom, expression and emotion. It makes your little dancer become a better one! We offer Creative alongside Prep and Primary Ballet. A great alternative to ballet and tap, but this said- we do have some 'single' ballet classes available.
We are a traditional 4-piece Gymnastics Club covering floor, bars, vault and beam. We usually train from Holt Park Active, but whilst we are awaiting to get back to our original site- we have a temporary home in LS9. Our club is called 'DEFYING GRAVITY'
Throughout this COVID period- we may limit our offering due to the limitations we are facing with regards to contact (equipment contact and staff/student contact).
Please seek our Gymnastics page for further information.
